Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School recently announced the selection of Michael McMillan, License Collector of the City of St. Louis, to serve on its Board of Directors. The school provides an educational program that prepares students for leadership roles in a multi-ethnic society.

Today, government programs combine with the incessant need for instant gratification to create a society where people seem upset that they have to earn anything they would get. Employers constantly are complaining that younger workers will take their paychecks, but seem unwilling to work.

I was very newly arrived at The St. Louis American after six years in New York when Russ Carnahan came to the paper for his candidate interview in his run for Dick Gephardt’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. I probably remember his candidate interview better than Jeff Smith’s because I asked our publisher, Donald M. Suggs, if I should wear a suit for the occasion. When I asked this, since it was an ordinary workday in summer, I must have been wearing baggy shorts and an African print shirt. Suggs replied, “You can wear what you’re wearing now.
