Immigrants and the Constitution

FREE ACLU EVENT

ACLU National Director's Series: Lucas Guttentag speaks in St. Louis on Immigrants and The Constitution

Immigration has been core issue for the ACLU since its founding. Today, it is a hot-button political and civil rights issue not only in Congress but in cities and states throughout the country as large-scale workplace raids become more common, immigration detention grows geometrically, access to the courts is under attack and local anti-immigrant laws are proposed around the country.  The ACLU is at the forefront of all these battles and is fighting to preserve civil liberties and constitutional rights against daunting odds.  What are the core constitutional values at stake and how is the ACLU responding?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Lucas Guttentag is the founding national director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project, which he established in 1987.  He has litigated major class action and constitutional cases on behalf of immigrants throughout the United States for twenty-five years, including in the Supreme Court where he won a landmark ruling that of immigrants are entitled to bring habeas corpus challenges to deportation. He was named a Human Rights Hero by the ABA’s Human Rights journal, designated one of the nation’s leading advocates of the last 25 years by the National Immigration Forum in Washington DC and received many other honors.  He graduated with honors from U.C. Berkeley and Harvard Law School, has testified before Congress, regularly speaks on immigration law and civil liberties, and teaches courses on immigrants’ rights at leading law schools.

Another Exceptional Article on the Credit Crisis Bailouts

From the New York Times:  In 1979, the government structured the Chrysler deal so that taxpayers might earn a profit from it (which they did). This year, the Fed effectively purchased securities from Bear Stearns that it hopes to sell for a gain when the financial markets calm down. While it’s way too early to know if the strategy will succeed as well as it did three decades ago, it’s certainly conceivable.

But if you take a moment to think through the full Chrysler story, you start to realize that it’s setting a really low bar. The Chrysler bailout may have saved the company, but it did nothing, after all, to stop Detroit’s long, sad decline.

Preparing for the Election: Voting Rights in 2008

The upcoming election in November has many Americans still wondering if they will be welcomed at the polls and iftheir vote will in fact count. The ACLU, in partnership with local and national organizations, has been distributing voter empowerment cards, conducting election day monitoring, and remedying voting rights violations as they occur. What challenges still remain for us at the state and local level in 2008? Are practices in place to dilute minority voting strength? Will this upcoming election be better than the last in terms of voting irregularities?

Speaker Information:
Laughlin McDonald has been director of the Voting Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union since 1972. He was born and grew up in Winnsboro, South Carolina, and graduated from Columbia College and the University of Virginia Law School. He has been in private practice and taught at the University of North Carolina Law School. He has represented minorities in numerous discrimination cases and specialized in the area of voting rights. He has argued cases before the U. S. Supreme Court, testified frequently before Congress, and written for scholarly and popular publications on civil liberties issues. His most recent book: A Voting Rights Odyssey: Black Enfranchisement in Georgia.

Boozy Lou

The latest addition of Mayor Slay's mini poll focuses on the role of alcohol in the city of St. Louis as well as some of the larger questions surrounding legal libations.

The poll touches on some more recent controversies such as the debate, sparked by the heads of several universities, over lowering the drinking age. The Mayor's respondents oppose the measure by 54% to 46%.

The polls on the Mayor's website have offered some interesting and entertaining snapshots of what at least a slice of the city is thinking.

It would, however, be interesting to get some additional detail on the breakdown of the respondents; how many total votes, where are they coming from, how do the numbers relate to recent election results–statistically.

Roubini: Pessimistic Svegali or Stopped Clock?

Nouriel Roubini, an economics professor at New York University, stood before an audience of economists at the International Monetary Fund and announced that a crisis was brewing. In the coming months and years, he warned, the United States was likely to face a once-in-a-lifetime housing bust, an oil shock, sharply declining consumer confidence and, ultimately, a deep recession. He laid out a bleak sequence of events: homeowners defaulting on mortgages, trillions of dollars of mortgage-backed securities unraveling worldwide and the global financial system shuddering to a halt. These developments, he went on, could cripple or destroy hedge funds, investment banks and other major financial institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The audience seemed skeptical, even dismissive. As Roubini stepped down from the lectern after his talk, the moderator of the event quipped, “I think perhaps we will need a stiff drink after that.” People laughed...

That's the intro to a piece in this week's New York Times Magazine examining the recent popularity of one of economics most dour practicioners. One whose caution and skepticism has made him a go-to guy for those whose hands hold the fiscal.

Roubini's speech in 2006 was seen as prescient by some, but coincidental by others. Roubini thinks of himself as a realist, while some of his colleagues see him as a pessimist who got it right this one time–the stopped clock.

His history of bleak assessments coupled with a publication history that was highly readable in a field known for its inaccessibility, made him easy for other economists to dismiss. Many of whom, it should be noted, chuckled away at "Dr. Doom" in 206.

In a time in which many economic commentators resemble a pack of Tiggers–bouncing along with the market, unaware and perky as they drift towards the cliff–the entrance of an Eeyore–whose skeptical take on the state of the economy likely wouldn't land them a slot on the cable business shows–is welcome.

Of course, like all reputable soothsayers these days, Roubini has a blog.
